چکیده

The formation of long chain unsaturated fatty acids from the corresponding saturated acids in animals was established by the work of Schoenheimer and Rittenberg (1) and Stetten and Schoenheimer (2). Recent studies in this laboratory have shown that in yeast the formation of Ag-unsaturated fatty acids is catalyzed by an enzyme system acting on the coenzyme A derivatives of the corresponding saturated fatty acids and requiring molecular oxygen and reduced triphosphopyridine nucleotide (3). In view of the aerobic nature of this process, it became of interest to test the ability of anaerobic microorganisms to synthesize unsaturated fatty acids. The present communication presents evidence for the synthesis of olefinic fatty acids in Clostridia by an anaerobic mechanism together with observations on the interrelationships between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in these organisms.

Effect of Nitrogen deficiency and light intensity on the fatty acid composition of Chaetoceros calcitrans

Marine diatoms are important sources of fat and fatty acids that are considered for aquaculture and alternative energy sources, and under varying environmental conditions in algae. In order to influence the nitrogen deficiency and light intensity of the medium culture on the C.calcitrans fatty acid composition, algae was exposed to 4 nitrogen treatments (25,50,75 and 100% nitrogen) and light in...

Effect of Gamma Irradiation on Fatty Acid Composition of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Fillets

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of low-dose gamma irradiation (0, 1, 3 and 5 kGy) on fatty acid composition of Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fillet. Among all of the fatty acids, oleic acid (C18:1) (with mean 33.50±3.02 g/100 g fatty acids) and myristoleic acid (C14:1) (with mean 0.41±0.26 g/100 g fatty acids) were the most predominant and the lowest fatty acids in ...

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of mortality in the world. Diets containing saturated fatty acids, industrial trans fatty acids and unsaturated Cis fatty acids, have different effects on blood lipids, insulin resistance, thrombosis and impaired endothelial cell function. Accordingly, this study aims at measuring the amount of fatty acids in some food products that are com...
